The burning of fuel used by aircraft engines results in carbon dioxide and other substances being released into the atmosphere.
Aviation is a relatively small contributor of greenhouse gases. However, predicted industry growth mean this contribution amount is likely to rise.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which was set up by the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organisation, the foremost global authority on the issue, has confirmed that aviation currently contributes 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions. The IPCC forecasts that aviation's emissions could rise to 3% by 2050.
While power generation and road transport remain the principal sources of greenhouse gases, individual airlines and the aviation industry as a whole are conscious of their impact and committed to doing everything possible to address the climate change issue.
